What Is Gravure Printing?

About Gravure Printing

Gravure printing is a printing method in which ink is applied to a metal plate engraved with tiny cells. Excess ink is removed using a doctor blade, and the substrate is pressed against the plate using a rubber impression cylinder. The image is then transferred precisely according to the pattern of these cells. By selecting compatible combinations of substrates and inks, gravure printing can be performed on a wide variety of materials, including paper and film, making it widely used in the printing of packaging materials.

Principle and Structure of Gravure Printing

The engraved cylinder rotates while immersed in the ink pan, picking up ink. The doctor blade removes excess ink, leaving ink only in the recessed areas of the pattern. Under pressure from the rubber impression cylinder, this ink is transferred onto the substrate, reproducing the desired image.

Applications of Gravure Printing

Gravure printing plays a vital role in many aspects of our daily lives, delivering rich colors and designs across a wide range of products and packaging.
